Poker Satellites - 2008 Series

WSOP Online QualifiersWorld Series of Poker satellites offer the chance to play in the Main Event held annually in Las Vegas and become a poker champion. The World Series game tournaments ultimately conclude with a $10,000 buy-in No Limit Holdem Main Event. Every year, the 2008 Series poker satellite tournaments attract thousands of fans to cheer on the crowning of a poker champion and the multi-million dollar prizes given to the main event final table players and eventual winner.

To compare the growth that the Series has seen in recent years; the 2003 WSOP main event had 839 entries for the $10,000 buy-in and the 2006 tournament had 8,773! This drastic growth in popularity has been primarily caused by TV networks like ESPN and the "Moneymaker Effect".

In the 2003 main event, an unknown online poker player named Chris Moneymaker became the 2003 Series champion and won the coveted bracelet along with $2.5 million after turning a $39 poker satellite seat into history.

Tournament History

Besides Chris Moneymaker's triumphant championship that he won from a poker satellite, the 2006 Series broke many records. The overwhelming number of entrants (8,773) alone surpasses all previous tournaments. The 2006 Series tournament not only had the most poker players it has ever seen but also had the largest prize pool ever awarded in tournament history with $12 million dollars in prize money going to first place.

Each tournament winner receives the coveted diamond bracelet as well as the grand prize money. A Series tradition is to bring in the millions of dollars for the final table in cardboard boxes and have the eventual champion place their picture on the Gallery of Champions at Binion's.

The winner of the Main Event has always carried the unofficial title of World Champion but today's top poker professionals have stated that the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event which was added to the tournament set recently, is the poker tournament that ultimately decides the world's best poker player. The 2007 Series results had Freddy Deeb winning $2.3 million in the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event which had the fifth biggest prize pool in tournament history.
