If you pay $1 to play in an online poker satellite, your chances of actually winning the qualifying seat is approximately 1:10,000.

However if you choose to play in an online qualifier with a buy-in of $1,000; then you have narrowed down your odds to about 1:10 which gives you a better opportunity to win the satellite seat.

The most common mistake among online poker satellite players is that they think it is necessary to play tight, as if it was a normal tournament with cash prizes. In normal tournaments though, 10-15% of the winners receive cash prizes. An online poker qualifier tournament has a MUCH less percentage of winners, approximately 1-2%.

If you are in an online poker satellite tournament and have been playing perfect tight poker, do not be surprised if you finish second and do not win a satellite seat.
