Steve Brecher Wins WPT Bay 101

Thursday, 26 March 2009 20:42

Steve Brecher was able to outlast Kathy Liebert to win the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star Tournament in San Jose, California. When final play began Brecher was in the chip lead while Liebert sat in fourth. Chan Vu was the short stack and he was eliminated first followed by Thao Le.

Tony Behari lost twice to Liebert and was eliminated in fourth place. That propelled Liebert into the chip lead which she held until her AK was outdone by Brecher’s AQ. That was the key hand of the final table as Brecher was all-in against Liebert but was able to turn a straight to get the huge win.

The three-way battle for the title was between Brecher, Liebert and Chris Moore. Brecher was able to eliminate Moore and then the heads up battle against Liebert began. It was a very long final table that broke the record of 303 hands for a WPT event as Brecher and Liebert made it to 319 hands before Brecher won took home the title.

WPT Bay 101 Final Reasults

$1,025,500 - Steve Brecher
$550,000 - Kathy Liebert
$291,500 - Chris Moore
$230,000 - Tony Behari
$180,000 - Thao Le
$135,000 - Chau Vu

The loss for Liebert was disappointing as she was looking to become the first female winner ever in a WPT main event. While she had the big name, Brecher also had a nice resume of accomplishments as a poker professional. He had made a WSOP, USPC and WPT final table in the past so he was not out of his comfort zone at the Bay 101 Shooting Stars final table.

In other poker news, the World Poker Tour (WPT) announced that they will be holding a tournament in Morocco. The World Poker Tour series has set up an event in Marrakech, Morocco at the Casino de Marrakech scheduled for sometime in October. This event will be the first WPT Main Event in Africa and is expected to attract a number of top pros. WPT tournaments are currently televised by Fox Sports Net.
