Foxwoods Classic Main Event Begins Friday

The main event of the Foxwoods Poker Classic will get underway on Friday as players put up the $10,000 entry fee into the World Poker Tour event. Preliminary events have been going on for over a week at Foxwoods. William Hill won over $100,000 in a $1,000 No-Limit Holdem event during the Foxwoods Classic. Foxwoods will also be holding a $3,000 and a $5,000 poker tournament during the classic.

In other poker news, the Asian Poker Tour announced their 2008 schedule. The Tour will start in the Philippines on May 27th. That event will be followed by tournaments in Macau, South Korea, and Singapore. Each of these tournaments will offer a $1 million (U.S.) guaranteed prize pool. The opening tournament will be in Manilla. The buy-in is $2,500 and will have a guaranteed $1 million prize pool.

Another major poker championship was forced to move its venue as the Norwegian Poker Championships was moved to Nottingham, England where the event will take place from April 28th through May 5th. Norwegian authorities are saying that poker is illegal in the country and organizers were worried about the event. Many Norwegian players will now have to travel to England to play in their own tournament. Estimates have as many as 500 Norwegian poker players expected to make that trip. The Norwegian Poker Championships are in their 7th year. Nine or ten events are expected to be on the schedule with No-Limit Holdem, Limit Holdem and Omaha tournaments the most popular ones.

April is a good month for poker on television. GSN has High Stakes Poker and the World Poker Tour on a regular basis on Monday nights. NBC has Poker After Dark during the week and they will also be starting broadcasts of the Heads-Up Poker Championship this month. ESPN also shows replays of the World Series of Poker on a regular basis and FSN is still running their Poker Superstars series.
