A total of 535 players put up $25,000 each to get into the WPT World Championship at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. That is a major drop from last year’s WPT Championship total of 639 players. The total prize pool will be just over $13 million with the top spot paid over $3.3 million. Most of the top professional poker players in the world are in the field including last year’s World Poker Tour Champ, Carlos Mortensen. The list of top name pros has all of the normal ones like Phil Hellmuth, Kenny Tran, Daniel Negreanu, David Benyamine, Gus Hansen, Freddy Deeb, Erik Seidel, Phil Ivey, Paul Wasicka, Barry Greenstein, etc. Some of the top players were eliminated early on including Hellmuth, Joe Hachem, Ted Forrest, Chris Ferguson, Wasicka and Michael Mizrachi. One of the early leaders was Michael’s brother Robert Mizrachi. Last year’s champ, Carlos Mortensen also got off to a good start as did Kenny Tran. Before this event began the WPT settled an antitrust complaint brought by a number of professional poker players that was filed almost two years ago. That is the reason players like Ferguson and Hachem are in this year’s Championship. In other poker news, the European Poker Tour (EPT) Grand Final was won by an online qualifier. Glenn Chorny, from Timmins, Ontario defeated 841 other players and took home over $3.1 million in first place prize money. The heads-up battle was a short one between Chorny and Denes Kalo who finished in second place. The event was held at the Monte Carlo Bay Hotel and Casino Resort.
