Five Card Stud |
Five Card StudThis is a variation of the Stud Poker variation in which each player receives 5 cards that originated mainly during the American Civil War. Although the popularity of the game is not much and it’s mostly played at home games and online game play. Basic Rules of Five Card StudIn 5 card stud each player receives 5 cards, 1 facing down and 4 facing up. The order of the cards are 1 facing down with 1 facing up, and then 3 consecutive cards facing up separated by a betting round, making it a total of 4 betting rounds. Table PositionsThis variation of poker uses “bring-in” to force action, the bring-in is defined as a mandatory bet done by a player with the lowest card that is visible; this is done during the first betting round. There is a dealer position defined but it is used as a symbolic identification of the player dealing the cards. There is also another position that all players assume which is the ante; a bet is made by all players before the action starts. Betting RoundsFirst Betting Round: Each player is bound to make the ante bet, once all players have posted the ante each player receives 2 cards (1 down and 1 up). Once this has been done the player with the lowest visible card is forced to make a “bring-in” bet, this starts the betting action and once done a new betting round is ready to start. Second Betting Round: Each player is receives another facing up card, the player with the best hand of its visible cards starts the action. This marks the start of the betting round and goes around clockwise player by player, once all players have acted a third betting round takes place. Third Betting Round: Again each of the remaining players receives another facing card up. The player with the best visible hand starts the action on the betting round. Once the betting round concludes the next round can start. Fourth Betting Round: A final upward card is dealt to each of the remaining players in the hand. The player with the best visible hand acts first. This starts the last betting round and once over, each player is to show their hands. Then a winner is declared by following the normal Poker Hand Ranking system. Table Limits (Stakes)5 Card Stud has a low limit and a high limit to restrict the bets on each round of betting. The low limit will define the ante and bring in. The ante will be 10% of the low limit while the bring-in will be 2 times the ante. During the first and second betting round, the low limit is the minimum you can bet or raise. During the third and fourth betting rounds the minimums are based on the high limit. Betting LimitsOn Five Card Stud, you will find 2 options of play: Fixed and Pot Limit tables. These limits define the maximums of every bet you do at a table. On fixed limit the maximum you can bet is set by the table limits, during the rounds were the minimum bet is set by the low limit the maximum will be the low limit as well. On the ones that have the minimum set as the high, they will use the same limit for the maximum bet. |
