Texas Holdem Betting

If you want to look at the definition of a bet in online poker it is a statement that you have the best hand and that you’ll wager money on it. The opposite of it could also be defined in poker as “giving up.” If you have a poor hand, you will fold if you are forced to wager on it. Most players will bet when they have a good hand and fold when they don’t.

But in Texas Holdem poker it is really never that easy and that is why so many people love the game.

The best players know how to go against the obvious of when and when not to bet and it is important to understand that just because people are supposed to bet with a good hand and fold with a bad hand does not mean they will. That is why bluffing is part of the game and why slow playing is a tactic many players use.

You should keep you betting simple and direct at first, and as you learn the game and learn how others bet, you can then go into some of the more advance Texas Holdem betting techniques. The first advanced betting move you should learn is called the “Blind Stealing” technique. When you are “on the button”, (in the dealer's position), and only you and the blinds are remaining in the game, a raise bet is referred to as "blind-stealing".

This term is used because your raise bet may scare off the blinds into folding their hands, but if you had simply checked, the blinds would stay in the hand since it would not cost them any more money. “Blind Stealing” is a good way to grind out some extra money and even help cover your blinds for future hands.

Another Texas Holdem betting technique is the “Steal-Raise.” If you are last in the betting order and all players have “checked” to you, (haven’t bet), you can make a bet or a raise large enough to get the table to fold. This technique shouldn’t be over-used though because good players can slow play big hands and that can mean trouble for you.

Many of these players will call your “bluff” and might even raise. Use this technique on occasion but remember it is better to use it when you have a promising draw hand such as a nut flush draw.

The game of No-Limit Texas Holdem is really a game of betting and these are just a few things you need to be aware of. As you continue to learn the game you will continue to come across more of the nuances of Texas Holdem betting.
