Poker Tip of the Day - Limit vs. No-Limit

Although the games are technically the same in the way the cards are dealt, Limit Texas Holdem and No-Limit Texas Holdem are different games. When you are playing No-Limit Texas Holdem if you make a bad choice it can cost you all of your money.

In Limit Holdem it only cost you one more bet. Limit Holdem is really a game about knowing the odds and having the cards while No-Limit Holdem is more a game about the players and strategy.

No-Limit Texas Holdem is a game where you can win a pot without having the best cards because you can force other players to fold. In Limit that rarely is the case. Playing Limit Texas Holdem is really a game of grinding it out with smaller pots while No-Limit Texas Holdem is a game with large wins and losses.

Playing No-Limit on a bad day means you could actually win all of your money back in just one pot. In Limit Holdem if you are going bad it will take some time to turn it around. Also remember that pot sizes and bankroll sizes definitely mean different things as in Limit everyone is on equal footing but in No-Limit the big stacks hold power.

Since it only costs you one more bet it is very unlikely that bluffing is going to work very well in Limit Holdem. Players are much more likely to call one more bet than they are to call an all-in bet. And check-raising works better in No-Limit than it does in Limit.

Raising always works better when you can raise more than just the minimum amount.

Reading people is important in both forms of Texas Holdem but it is more important in No-Limit since one mistake can cost you a lot of money. Limit Holdem is more a game where your decisions are pretty straightforward and easy to make while No-Limit can wrench your guts.

A big decision in your favor can win or lose you a lot of money. Remember when playing Texas Holdem that Limit and No-Limit may look the same but they play very differently.
