Poker Tip of the Day - Exciting Rebuy Poker Tournaments

Wednesday, 08 July 2009 00:02

One of the most popular No-Limit Texas Holdem tournaments that fit right into the very loose style of today’s poker, particularly online poker, is the rebuy tournament. In a rebuy tournament, players that are knocked out early can simply rebuy more chips and get right back into the game.

One of the best strategies for a player to use at a rebuy tournament is to constantly change gears and keep his opponents guessing. Just because you can buy more chips does not mean you have to be reckless.

Those chips still cost real money and need to be used in good spots. Sometimes a great strategy to use against the loose play in rebuy tourneys is to wait for a big hand to double up with.

There is no question your thought process and your strategy has to be different with a rebuy tournament. You must be aware of the maniacs and have a strategy to take advantage of them. You also can’t be afraid to take chances.

Coin flips are good things in rebuy tournaments as long as you are willing to rebuy yourself if you happen to get outdrawn.

Normally there is a time frame, such as one hour or a set number of levels in rebuy tournaments in which players can buy more chips. After this time period, the tournament then turns into the traditional freezeout in which players are eliminated when their stacks are wiped out.

There is no question that rebuy tourneys bring out the “maniac.” Players will play these tournaments extremely loose during the rebuy periods because they have the insurance policy of being able to “reload” and purchase more chips should they lose their stacks with aggressive play.

That means you have players going all-in with marginal hands in an attempt to double up and accumulate chips. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not.

Amazing as it may sound, oftentimes in a rebuy Texas holdem tournament, particularly at online poker sites, patience is the ultimate virtue and weapon. In addition, a player that is patient in a rebuy tournament will often see the other players simply blow each other away with maniac play that will carry over into the freezeout portion of the event.

If you want to play it tight it can work if you get it in with the best hand often enough. Just because it is a rebuy tournament does not mean you have to rebuy. You will sometimes see patient players pick off the maniacs and end up the winners in rebuy tournaments.
