Limit Texas Holdem poker is very much a game of having the cards, while No-Limit Texas Holdem is very much a game of betting. If you are looking to play Limit Holdem and expecting to bluff and raise and win pots then you better re-evaluate your ideas. Oftentimes at online poker sites you will see Limit Holdem games going down to the river. This does not happen nearly as often in No-Limit Holdem. You could actually say that Limit Holdem is a game about having the nuts, or the best hand. In Limit Holdem both the betting and raise amounts and frequency are capped, thus, a player is less likely to be afraid of making one more bet to stay in the hand compared to No-limit Holdem where the price may simply be made too high by a big bet. In Limit Holdem, especially today’s no foldem Holdem, if a player has stayed around to the river he isn’t likely to be intimidated out of the pot by a raise someone may make. What this means is that you need the cards to win most of the time when playing Limit Holdem. It also means you must adjust your play accordingly. Limit Holdem at online poker sites is about making your hand. So many players continue to chase draws that a lot of the time someone is going to hit. Players that limped in and called with marginal hands are sometimes going to hit those longshot draws. It happens more often in Limit Holdem since there is a limited amount of raising that can be done. There could easily be 20 bets in the pot by the time the showdown comes along and that means calling another bet is almost always going to happen. You really need to be holding a good hand in Limit Holdem if you want to win pots. That means you rarely will steal pots and you rarely will win without having the cards. A Limit Holdem player with a good, but not great hand will likely hang in through the river knowing that other players who have stayed in may have marginal hands as well. You can’t just be limping into the pot with any two cards. You must play strong starting hands and also hands that have great drawing potential like suited connectors. The gap hands like ace-jack, queen-ten, 10-7 just don’t play very well in Limit Holdem. Stick to strong starting hands and hands with great drawing potential and you can hold the nuts at the river and make some money at Limit Holdem. |
