Poker Tip - Adjusting Your Starting Hands

You have probably all seen the starting hands list that is popular for Texas Holdem. The problem with that list is that it doesn’t always work, especially in Limit Texas Holdem where people are playing all kinds of hands.

There may be situations in Texas Holdem where an adjustment on your starting hands may lead to making more money. In a lower limit Texas Holdem game, such as $1-2 or $2-4, you often have several players in any given hand, and after the river is dealt, there are still players in the hand.

In this type of game it is often more profitable to also play other hands like connectors, suited connectors, and suited non-connectors. These are all drawing hands. Keep in mind that in Texas Holdem limit games, the best starting hands rarely win.

In a low-limit game where just about everyone who calls the blind goes to the river, it is even less likely to happen. Don’t be afraid to loosen up and take a shot with those drawing hands in Limit Texas Holdem.

In Limit Holdem, a starting hand like 8-9 suited becomes potentially more profitable because if you do make your hand, either a straight or a flush, it will likely be the best hand on the river. It will also get paid off very well because so many people are still in the hand.

You will beat out those with top pair, or top two pair, and perhaps even someone with a set. In low-limit Texas Holdem you know that all of these hands will stay to the river and probably pay you off.

Here is another example. An Ace-six suited is certainly worth a call in Limit Holdem, especially when it’s five or six handed going in to the flop, and if you catch a couple of your suit, then you have a chance to make money.

Although you will be seeing a lot more starting hands, which translates into more blinds, a large payoff when you hit your hands will more than make up for playing more hands.

It is all about hitting the big hand when playing Limit Texas Holdem and that means you must adjust your starting hands.

That is what Limit Texas Holdem is all about. You look for the big pots and to have a chance to win them you have to play more hands.
