Playing Poker is a Game About People

Texas Holdem poker at online poker sites, either Limit poker or No-Limit poker is not just a game of cards, hands, reads and draws but just as important it is a game of people, each having their own styles, philosophies and personalities.

The sooner you develop a working knowledge of your online poker opponents and their patterns the sooner you will have an edge over them.

You can have the same pocket hands and same community cards to several different groups of people at online poker sites and you will surely get several different results with none being the same. Everyone will play these poker hands somewhat differently and also these same people will play these exact same cards differently from different positions. You would play a power pair hand one way against a tight conservative player compared to how you would play it against a loose player.

For example, let’s say you have a pair of queens from a late poker position and a tight player who has hardly participated at all is before you and now comes in with a raise. What is the first thing to consider? Why all of a sudden is this tight passive player suddenly raising? You have to consider the possibility, if not probability, that your queens could very well be in trouble.

If you are up against a maniac who raises nearly every time you should neither respect nor fear the poker raise since it is a common occurrence from a player notorious for such play. Your same pocket queens are stronger and receive better value from his play. This example shows you having the same hands, same position and yet different players and personalities.

What happens at online poker sites when you are in a late position with a small pair or suited medium connector cards and the maniac just limps in, as do one or two others as everyone else folds. All of a sudden your hand increases in value because this player that raises this time limps which is a tip off that he has a true garbage hand but he simply can’t just muck the hand, he has to try and draw.

You might even be able to bluff with your hand with a strong powerful raise in this situation and get him to muck his hand and limit the field down even more.

You can never have enough information on your online poker opponents. Unlike the cards which you cannot see, you can see your opponent’s actions and base them on their past history so you are better prepared the next time you are in a hand with them.
