There is only one hand in Texas Holdem that is better than pocket kings (“Cowboys”) and that is pocket aces. Many online poker players can often get themselves into trouble because they don’t play pocket kings properly. How do you play pocket kings to make the most money when playing online Texas Holdem? Pocket kings are definitely a great hand in Texas Holdem. They are one of the strongest pocket poker hands possible and that makes them very hard to get away from even when they are beaten. The one big drawback to pocket kings and the great fear of the Texas Holdem players holding them is the ace on the flop, turn, or river. It happens all too often in poker, particularly online poker and at multi-player poker tables that still have a lot of hands in the pot. Most of the time Texas Holdem players holding pocket kings will come out firing with a raise and that is almost always a good plan. Regardless of position if one of the other poker players is holding an ace, particularly at an online poker table, he is likely to call a raise and take his chances on the draw in the hopes of making top pair and that can present some problems as we already outlined. A Texas Holdem player in late position with pocket cowboys is in a great position and has many options although raising is still the best choice. The goal here for the Texas Holdem player with pocket kings is to chase away as many drawing poker hands as possible and to charge a premium price to any players willing to call a raise in order to see the flop and draw on his likely ace. So when do you need to fold pocket kings? Many players will never fold them but that is not always a wise choice. You don’t want to become “pot committed” in the face of aces from another Texas Holdem player. If an ace is drawn on the flop and a player at the poker table comes out firing he likely made his over-pair and as tough as it is to do, you must throw those kings into the muck. |
