Let’s see why that is the case. It seems pretty obvious that you can lose more money playing No-Limit Texas Hold’em poker than you can playing Limit Hold’em, but it is really not that simple. You can actually lose in either game, it is just the larger losses occur in No-Limit because the pots are bigger. A few bad-beat big losses in No-Limit can take weeks to recover from. A few bad-beats in Limit Texas Hold’em can be made up in a much shorter period of time. Let me give you a couple of examples. Say you were playing No-Limit Texas Hold’em poker and were all-in with your Aces against Kings before the flop but you got outdrawn and lost. The same hand in Limit Hold’em is not going to be nearly as damaging for you. You might be able to make back the losses from that one hand before the day or the session ended. It is nearly impossible to recover from that loss in No-Limit in just one day. No-Limit Texas Hold’em really has a very short run but a lot longer long run when it comes to expected win ratios. You really can’t lose everything in Limit poker in one hand if the buy-in was large enough. You can lose everything at any time in No-Limit if someone has more chips than you do. The big hands play a much larger part in No-Limit Texas Hold’em than they do in Limit; therefore, the volatility is greater. Always remember when you choose a poker game to realize that recovery time is much greater in No-Limit because the ups and downs are greater. Limit poker is much more a grind it out game, and while there are big pots, the overall percentage of your bankroll is not nearly as high. If you are taking a shot at No-Limit Texas Hold’em remember to see what the stack sizes are of your opponents. You really want to have more money than they do because you don’t want to get pushed around and lose a big pot to a bigger stack. This is not nearly as critical in Limit where the amounts are fixed and the bets the same. |
