There are two main reasons you want to raise a pot in online betting at poker sites. You want to limit the amount of players in the hand or you want to drive up the value of the pot. Sometimes that elimination will take care of all of the players in the hand and you will win the pot right there. When you drive people out of the pot you always gain a better understanding of where you are in the hand. For example, let’s say that you have a pair of Jacks and raise the pot. You get three callers before a re-raise. That re-raise drove out everyone except for you. You are now heads up against your opponent. Your raise told you a lot and the other player’s re-raise told you even more. Let’s say you hold A-Q suited on the button. This is a pretty good starting hand and you are in position. Everyone limps in, so you raise to find out where you are at. Four people stay in the pot with you and the flop is A-10-2. Someone bets in front of you and two people call. You re-raise. This narrows it down to you and two other people. The turn is a King and now there are some big problems out there. One of the other two people leads out with a bet and that is a worry. You can fold, call, or you can re-raise. If you re-raise then it will definitely show you where you are at. This should narrow it down to just you and the one other player. If you get re-raised again then you know you are in trouble. The river is pretty meaningless since you know the other player is not going to fold if he already raised and re-raised every time. Raising is a big part of online betting in poker. Raising helps you determine where you are in the hand. Some people will call a raise no matter what they have, but most people recognize that a raise means strength. The goal with your raise is to drive people out and to know where you stand in the hand. Keep that in mind then next time you are at the online poker table. |
