Betting Instead of Checking

Download NowTexas Holdem, like all forms of poker, is a game of incomplete information. Knowing everything would, of course, make Texas Holdem unplayable. With incomplete information, however, many Texas Holdem players, especially online Texas Holdem poker players, are prone to mistakes. One of the most common mistakes poker players make is they should be betting instead of checking.

Many Texas Holdem players will check when they flop a middle pair, mainly because they do not think that their hand is that great. Middle pair really isn’t that great of a hand, but checking this hand can be a mistake in both Limit Texas Holdem and No-Limit Texas Holdem. Playing three or four handed No-Limit Texas Holdem, the middle pair can easily be bet instead of checked, and especially when playing in early position in a tight game.

Betting middle pair works in a variety of situations, against both rainbow flops (all different suits) and also against two-suited flops (club-club-diamond). Against a rainbow flop, you are more likely to have the better hand, and against a two-suited flop, you can avoid giving someone a free card, and at the same time be almost guaranteed a call. Provided you prevail, this extra bet will increase your overall profit while playing Texas Holdem. Now, clearly, against a three-suited flop, a check and fold may be in order, as it would be with a flop containing multiple over-cards, such as K-Q-10.

In No-Limit Texas Holdem, betting this hand as opposed to checking, offers a few more advantages. First, it allows you to set the pace of the hand. By coming out firing, you decide how much to open for, and the others must decide whether or not to call. This relieves you of trying to decide whether or not to call. Secondly, betting may also allow you to see the turn card cheaper, since a check may produce a larger bet out of your opponent then you had originally intended.

Finally, No-Limit and Limit Texas Holdem players alike make the mistake of checking a missed hand on the river. At this point in the hand, especially in Limit Texas Holdem, you are getting pretty good odds on your hand, perhaps 5-1 or better, which means you only have to be successful every so often to make this strategy pay. As an added benefit, you get some pretty good “advertising” if you do get called and lose. Just make sure to use it to your advantage.
