The Size of the Poker Pot |

There are definitely many reasons why a Texas Holdem poker player should take the size of the poker pot under serious consideration but the most important of all, the bottom line to the poker pot size equation is that the size of the poker pot is directly related to the risks and rewards of the game. For example, when a Texas Holdem player is involved in poker hands in which many of the players have put money into the poker pot, those hands are likely to carry excellent “pot odds” which is another way of saying that the ratio of money in the pot makes the risk a poker player must take to win the poker pot worthwhile. Marginal hands that a player may have ordinarily tossed away would be worth playing if the pot odds are strong enough. For example, let’s say you have pocket 10’s. If after the flop you are faced with calling a $30 bet into a pot that has grown to $300 total it is an easy call regardless of what is on the board because your pott odds of improving to a set are better than 10-1. Now if you had this same hand and the pot odds were only $100 and you had to bet $30 to keep going, the pot odds would not be nearly as good or worth playing. Online poker players, especially online Texas Holdem poker players must be willing to make more calls because the pot odds are often much higher and better than they would be with the exact same poker hands at an in-person poker table. Online poker is a more action-oriented game and Texas Holdem players at an online poker table must take advantage of those better pot odds they are likely to see. It is definitely true that the size of the poker pot will dictate a lot of your decisions in poker. This seems to be the case more at online poker sites because the play seems to be loose and the poker pot sizes get bigger and that means better poker pot odds. The better odds you can get means the more hands you can play and that is always good news because you want to have a chance to hit the big pot and win money. |
